Why we Play

In 1998, Allison Crowson started the Bluebonnet Opry. The monthly show was held every third Thursday at the Brenham Fireman’s Training Center. Ms. Crowson eventually stepped down from running the opry when she became an assistant principal at Brenham High School, but several interested individuals decided that the show should go on. The opry was relocated to Silver Wings Ballroom, renamed the Friends of Bluebonnet Opry, and repurposed as a nonprofit benefiting the local Brenham Hospice branch.

Bill Harris became the first chairman, leading the opry until his death, and Raymond & Erma Walker were leaders until their retirement in December 2007 due to Erma's failing health. At that time, Henry & Eunice Drews became co-chairs alongside seventeen board members. The opry committee works hard every month to put on a show that draws spectators from across Texas and visitors from other states.

Harris Kubos Sr. is the leader of the opry house band, which plays with the monthly performers. The opry has hosted many talented musicians, including Tony Booth, Darrell McCall, Jake Hooker, Stephen Pride, David Church, and many skilled local performers.

Through the combined efforts of the sponsors and supporters of the Friends of the Bluebonnet Opry, we have been able to make sizeable donations to our local Hospice branch. The opry has raised over $100,000 for Hospice in the past twenty-six years.
